Marketing Guru Seth Godin is becoming his own publisher. And quicker then you can go “hmmm,” I will say that this is a move that makes total sense. All the book publisher was doing was collecting money – Seth has created his own audience thanks to the Internet (along with additional factors), and he has its pulse in the palm of his hand. Musicians should take note of this. Why license your music for almost nothing and rarely see a royalty when you can easily release it yourself? All you have to do is build your audience. Gee – how do you do that? You can start by engaging your fans, and I don’t mean by sending them text messages. Musicians can reach out to whatever fans they have via blogging and You Tube, and all it really takes is just a little bit of time. Donnie Vie of Enuff Z’Nuff started to get it right (via
You Tube video diaries and special unplugged recordings), but it looks like he has stopped. A band like Enuff Z’Nuff has a few thousand loyal fans, so with a little persistence (and don’t forget a dose of MATURITY), that number can grow. But, my friends, it also takes a focused effort. So if you are lucky enough to have those few thousand diehard fans, then you are lucky enough to have a good head start for your next project. And as Cheap Trick once sang……REACH OUT! It's not easy, but it should be worth it if you work hard.
