Now this is some sad, sad news. Former Warrant lead singer and songwriter Jani Lane has been found dead in a Los Angeles-area motel room. It looks like one of the Down Boys has gone to heaven! Having been a tortured soul for quite some time, Jani never really seemed to come to grips with fleeting fame. In fact, he seemed at times despondent and bitter over the fact that he wrote a big hit like “Cherry Pie.” Imagine that! Most would-be rockers would give anything to have such a popular song. Too bad Jani had a hard time embracing it!
I last saw Jani at a live performance at Dingbatz in Clifton, NJ. The radio show The Tour Bus gave me free tickets, and I went with low expectations as he had developed a reputation for flaking out during shows and under-delivering for one reason or another. Much to my surprise, Jani put on a really good show that night, and it was fun to see while in that audience. As a fan, I hoped for the best.
Jani always wrote things online or spoke about writing a new album, or even writing for other artists. Like with Ace Frehley, there always seemed to be something in the pipeline, yet nothing rose to the top. I guess we’ll never know unless some demos and recording surface. Unfortunately, he didn’t seem to enjoy his life very much over the past few years. It would have been nice to see him embrace his “Cherry Pie” notoriety. There was even a failed Warrant reunion. Too bad!
Jani looked and sounded well as the singer for Great White in 2010. Again, things look brighter and as a fan I was looking forward to the future. Jani Lane has always been a guy that I would pull for; one that I would hope turn things around and get back in the rock n’ roll ring for a few more rounds. Sadly, this will not happen. Jani Lane has been found dead at age 47.
My condolences to Jani’s daughters, relatives, those who worked with him in the music industry, and to those who were touched by his work in one way or another. Rest in peace. And if you’re up there, teach Jimi Hendrix the guitar part to “Uncle Tom’s Cabin!”
Not to name drop, but in an e-mail from Tracii Guns today, he mentioned that Jani once gave him a Mohawk! It was a look that didn’t quite work for Jani, but Gunner rocked it out well. On the few occasions that I did meet him, Jani was nothing but a nice guy with a smile and a handshake. Sorry to see you go, Mr. Lane. Much, much too soon.
